You have tried the expensive shampoos. The leave-in treatments. The weekly masks. The silk pillowcase. You have done everything right, and your hair still feels like straw by Wednesday.
Nobody told you to check the water.
What chlorine actually does to your hair
Chlorine is added to Australian water supplies as a disinfectant. It does its job well. The problem is that it does not stop working when it reaches your shower. Every time you wash your hair, free chlorine strips away the natural sebum layer that keeps your scalp moisturised and your hair cuticle sealed.
Sebum is not a product you can buy. It is your scalp's own protective oil. Without it, your hair shaft becomes porous and rough, which means:
- Frizz that no serum fixes
- Colour that fades faster than it should
- Ends that split and break before they can grow
- An itchy, flaky scalp that has nothing to do with dandruff
Then there is hard water
Large parts of Australia, including Adelaide, Perth, and much of the regional inland, live with hard water. Hard water is water with a high mineral content, primarily calcium and magnesium. When it evaporates off your hair and scalp, it leaves these minerals behind as deposits. They coat the hair shaft, making it feel rough, and they build up on your scalp where they can block follicles and disrupt your scalp's natural environment.
Clarifying shampoos can remove some of this buildup. But they strip everything else as well, including the sebum you need. And they do nothing about the next shower. Or the one after that.
The maths nobody tells you
The average person showers 365 times a year. Each shower is roughly 8 minutes of chlorinated, mineral-heavy water running directly over your scalp and hair. That is 2,920 minutes of chemical exposure every year, addressed with nothing.
The shampoo industry is built on treating the downstream result of this exposure. A filtered shower head addresses the source.
What a filter actually removes
The HelloWaterly filter uses three stages: KDF-55 media removes up to 98% of free chlorine. Calcium sulphite neutralises chloramines, the compounds that survive standard carbon filters. Activated carbon captures heavy metals including lead, mercury, and iron.
What reaches your scalp is clean water. Not spa water. Not mineral water. Just water without the things that should not be there.
Most customers notice a difference within two to three washes. Not because the filter is performing a miracle, but because your scalp's natural recovery process can finally start working without being interrupted every morning.
